An overview of recent geopolitical briefings, what's coming, and other articles
Over the past month, President Trump has brought the rest of the world into sharper focus. He’s said he wants to make Canada the 51st state, annex Greenland, and take back control of the Panama Canal. He also started sending some illegal migrants in the US to the Migrant Operations Center at the US Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba and has said he wants the US to take over Gaza and send the Palestinians who live there packing.
It struck me that Americans (and others) often are unaware of the US history with these places and why they may be appealing to Trump. So in recent weeks, I’ve been looking at several of these places.

To wit: We looked at the allure of Greenland in this newsletter. Regarding Panama, here is a post about how the US helped to create Panama and the early attempts at building the Panama Canal, while this post homes in on US involvement in Panama in the 20th and 21st centuries. We look at the history of the US in Cuba in this newsletter.
In the near future, we’ll be exploring Canada, the neighbor that the US knows so little about, and China’s Belt and Road Initiative that is funding huge infrastructure projects across Latin America, Asia and Africa. And more.

I’ve also written an article about overtourism for the new Keinrath Publications, which also features an interesting piece about using AI in therapy. Next week, the Science History Institute in Philadelphia will publish a wild article I wrote about how Renaissance collectors helped boost science. I’ll send a link then.
